Tips
Tradition says that the body of Santiago the Great was taken back to Galicia where he had supposedly preached, after his martyrdom in Jerusalem in 44. In 813, a star shows the location of his grave and Alphonse II erects a cathedral in that spot. In the Middle Ages, half a million of pilgrims crossed each year the Pyrenees to Roncevaux or to Somport pass to come and meditate. They would often carry scallop (Santiago’s shell) which became the saint’s symbol, after he used it to save a Christian lord from drowning upon escaping the Moores.
