Originally from North Arabia, this tribe of nomads expanded greatly through trading in incense and spices from the Arabia Felix (Yemen). Gradually, this tribe controlled the caravan routes by trading with India, the Hellenistic world then Rome.
These wealthy Nabatean caravanners settled in the vast rocky creek of Petra (3 km x 5 km), true natural place that become their capital and their necropolis. Drawing their influence from their expeditions in Egypt, Syria, Arabia, Mesopotamia, the Hellenistic world and the Roman Empire, the Nabataeans transformed the ocher, purple and pink sandstone rocks into magnificent buildings.
